    Description

AUSTRALIA 2009 Proof Set Year of Astronomy
The year 2009 is the International Year of Astronomy, a world-wide celebration of our exploration of the universe. It marks the 400th anniversary Galileo. Galileo’s first use of the telescope and is recognition of his revolutionary discoveries that began modern astronomy. With the theme ‘The Universe, Yours to Discover’, the International Year of Astronomy 2009 is an initiative of the International Astronomical Union and is endorsed by the United Nations and UNESCO
To mark this occasion the Royal Australian Mint dedicated its 2009 year set to this event. A unique coin was produced for the 2009 6 coin proof year set and a unique 20 cent coin for the 2009 6 coin uncirculated year set. The proof coin features an image of the famous radio telescope located in Parkes NSW, symbolic of Australia’s place in international astronomy. The 20 cent uncirculated coin features an image of star-gazers against a star-chart backdrop, representing the many thousands of amateur astronomers in Australia.
